    Illustrator:
    Fran Meneses
By Maria Flores. Issue 1, October 2017

A freelance illustrator and author, Fran Meneses is currently based in Hastings, UK. She finished her BA in Graphic Design at the Diego Portales University in Santiago, Chile.

I first stumbled upon Fran Meneses' illustrations on her Youtube Channel "Frannerd" where she documents her life as a full-time freelancer in the UK and to tell you the truth I could listen to her talk for hours. Her warm personality, humor, and visible passion for her career have made her channel feel like a safe place to talk among friends. Her topics range from motivation to the hardship of moving to a new country and finding inspiration in the simple moments of life.

It is an honor for me to have Fran Meneses as the first guest of this series and I hope you as the reader find this an inspiring series.

Could you tell us something about your childhood years?

"When I was little, I wanted to be Sailor Moon so bad that I put a moon shaped sticker on my cat's forehead. It didn't end up really well."

How do you stay motivated to paint/draw?

"For me, motivation is such an important quality because no matter how you are emotional or physically in your career and personal life you can't lose motivation. I think motivation is such a personal thing and it depends on what works best for you.

In order, for me to stay motivated throughout the day, I do the following: (1) I make a list of all the things I need to do in a day. By having a list, I will know exactly when my work is over and it forces me to complete my tasks. Also, the satisfaction that I feel after completing my "to-do" list is priceless. (2) I take breaks throughout the day to recharge myself. (3) I listen to podcasts, such as; Being Boss and Invisible Office Hours. (4) I make sure to have a clean and organized desk. So, at the end of the day, I would clean and organize my desk for the next morning."

[For more tips on motivation, check Fran's Youtube video]

When did you realize you wanted to pursue illustration/design?

"I started drawing when I was a little girl. Back then, my main reference (and hero) was Sailor Moon. I became very good at drawing anime, but it was not until my third year of college that I decided to find my own style and developed an identity as an illustrator."

What does a typical day at work look like?

"A typical day at work looks different as a freelancer, not every day will be the same as the other. So, I usually wake up at 7:30 AM and do exercise such as; running or yoga. I usually take three breaks during the day, two of them are coffee breaks at 11 AM and 4:30 PM, I have a lunch break at 12:30 for about an hour. I officially start working around 10:30 AM on illustration and any other related project."

Can you tell us a bit more about your new book "Personas Favoritas"?

"This book is about adult friendship. There are so many books about this topic for children and teens but not for adults and the hardships of making or keeping friends. Both my husband (Ed) and I, worked as a team with me doing the illustrations and Ed writing the stories."

Right now the book is only available in Spanish, check this video to learn more about the process of creating the book and where to buy it if interested.

Most of the time I feel lost in this sea of opportunity, stuck in one place. Is not about trying or finding my way out, is more about been out-there in the world doing something. Maybe it is a human thing to think that the reason we are born is 'purpose' and there must be something I am supposed to accomplish before my life ends.

What is my purpose? That I cannot answer, I don't have the answer to such a profound question. All I know is what I can do right now in this specific moment--I can get my act together and find joy in life. Get out in the world and create the things I have always wanted, color my hair in purple and pink, get a piercing in my nose and ears, read romantic novels, write incoherent and random thoughts, paint lines with purpose, and breathe again. Breath all there is of this world and its people, breath the knowledge into me and maybe, just maybe along the way I can find pieces of the task I must complete before the lights go off.

The world has become a complicated place to be but there is no other place like it. People have become more complicated as time passes but there are not others like us-- with all our insecurities, passion, pain, complication, and laughter, we are one of a kind and I wish most of us could see that. I wish we could see that the only way we can go on is by understanding one another and all of our baggage.

You see, I like to ramble but it helps me out--it makes me less 'lost' if that is really a thing.

P.S- I hope you like this series of 'Cup of Tea' that you find some truth, inspiration, or even relate to this unstructured piece. If you do, leave a message. Let's chat, I don't think I will mind that.

To all of you, have a great week!

REI KAWAKUBO/ COMME DES GARCONS: ART OF THE IN-BETWEEN

    2. Design/Not Design- "The Future of Silhouette"

This exhibition examines nine expressions of "in-between" in Kawakubo's collection: Absence/Presence; Design/Not Design; Fashion/Antifashion; Model/Multiple; High/Low; Then/Now; Self/Other; Object/Subject; and Clothes/Not Clothes. "It reveals how her designs occupy the spaces between these dualities--which have come to be seen as natural rather than social or cultural-- and how they resolve and dissolve binary logic"(The Met).

The whole concept and structural design in the way that the pieces where position and the color, created this whole idea of "emptiness" and artificiality and it makes think further than the design in front of you. I recommend for you to see this exhibition, it will be open until September 4 at the Met Museum.

The pictures above are my favorite pieces of the exhibition. Every year the Met shows a fashion exhibition on different concepts, last years exhibition was on Fashion in the Age of Technology ( I did a post on this exhibition on my other blog). This is a must see exhibition, so if you are ever planning to travel to New York-- it usually runs from May to September.

Thank you for stopping by and have a blessed day!

    DATE NIGHT @ THE MUSEUM

On Saturday, I went to visit the MET with my mother on a daughter & mother date. The MET is located on 86th 5th Avenue. It is an enormous museum with plenty to see!

We went through the left side of the museum, where the Roman & Greek, Oceania, South America, and Contemporary/Modern exhibitions are located. We had a blast and I discovered new pieces of arts that I was unaware of and also had a lot of fun hanging out with my mother. Visiting a museum with my mother is like a walk through a comedy show, she knows how to make you laugh and ventured into places you have never seen--which is how we got to see all these others exhibition.

I know there are lots of pictures but those were the pieces that I liked the most. For those out there who are art lovers, you will fall in love all over again at the Met. The vast collection of sculptures, furniture, and paintings will leave you with plenty to see for months to come. This is one of my favorite museums in New York City and I am so glad I live close by to see the beauty of it.

I hope that you have enjoyed this post and the picture on it. Please share and comment below!

Japanese minimalism comes from the idea "that less is more". There is a growing number of Japanese who embrace the minimalist lifestyle, which allows the mind to focus on the important things--rather than to concentrate on materialist items. There is less time spent buying and cleaning and more time doing what you want to do, such as traveling and spending time with people, creating relationships. The minimalist style is been adopted worldwide , especially among young adults.

Original people from ancient times was loved and it has lived with nature. Especially the Japanese always enjoy change of the four seasons for every season, and came as a part of life. People live with nature. Sometimes it may live inconveniently...

I have always love Japanese minimalist style when it comes to interior design and fashion. There is a sense of serenity and openness when you look at Japanese interior design and fashion. Some of us have so many things that at the time seemed necessary but are actually not. All these items take up all the space in our homes and closet and clutter our minds and space.

The use of neutral and pastel colors makes the home feel at ease and peaceful. A place where you will like to spend all your time and that's how a home should feel like. A space to create, relax, and enjoy with family and friends. The same goes with fashion, there is something delicate  about neutral colors on clothing and minimalist style that creates serenity and makes you look comfortable.

I am currently in the process of decluttering my closet and finding pieces that represent who am I as of now.  As I get closer to my mid-20s, I have become more aware of the impact that having many things have on a person, physically and psychological. I personally, think that the more things you have the more your mind is filled with rambling thoughts that make it difficult to think clearly.

Right now I am in the process of finding myself and letting go of unnecessary things,so this is my first step on setting myself free.

Thank you for stopping by and have a blessed day!

I was never aware of the true cost of "fast" fashion and the impact that it has on the environment and human rights. After watching a video by LaMadelynn on Ethical Fashion and the documentary on Netflix "The True Cost", I realize how cruel the industry can be and I begin to research more on ways to be more ethical when it comes to buying clothing. To become more aware of the items of clothing I buy and from which stores to buy.

    LaMadelynn Youtube Video

The True Cost documentary shows the reality behind the fashion factories in "third-world" countries. These factories are violations of international human rights and labor laws, utilization of child labor, and/or immense environmental destruction. The documentary follows factories workers in countries like Bangladesh, China, and Cambodia as well as activists in these countries and Western countries sharing their experiences working in these factories and the effects it has on the workers and the environment. It is heart-breaking to see the cruelty, abuse, and unsafe situation that workers in these factories have to deal with in order for us to get a $5 shirt or $20 jeans.

I took upon me to research more on ethical clothing brands. You need to be aware that buying ethical clothes will be much more expensive than the clothing you are used to buying. Yet, I believe that it is an investment and somehow it would have a positive impact on our environment. I think that building a closet with essential pieces will not only make getting dressed easier but it will declutter and force you to buy essential items of clothing that you will actually use and that will last longer than a $5 dollar shirt from Walmart.

The following list of ethical clothing stores was gathered from Joo Joo Azad and Anuschkarees blogs and from my own research, so check them out. They have more information on ethical fashion and clothing brands that are unethical.

    1. New Classic Studios
    2. Osborne
    3. Garmentory: this is an online source for emerging and contemporary fashion.
    4. First Rite: this store is based in Los Angeles, CA.
    5. Black Crane: is a brand by Alexander Yamaguchi and Momoko Suzuki and it is inspired by Japanese culture and civilization.
    6. ModCloth

There are other ways that you can also help end with the human cruelty and environmental effect. If you are like me, I can't afford many of these clothes, so instead go to a thrift store or buy from online stores like Thred Up and Etsy, and maybe even making your own clothes.
This is a process and it can't be eliminated overnight, I am not a big shopper but now I can become more conscious of what I buy and where I buy it. I hope this information helps you.

Thank you for stopping by and have a blessed day!

Lost in Transition is my journal, where I'll write about different topics and about life. I thought of creating this blog more and so for myself, as a platform to see how my life as a 23-year-old expands (I guess, I don't think that's the right word). The point is that I want to see how I grow and take this as a challenge to go out more and explore, and truly live life.

So, you are totally welcomed to take this journey with me and to learn together.

I hope to see you around!
